  • With 395 Articles and eight Schedules, the Indian Constitution is the largest written Constitution in the world. On 29 August, 1947, the Constituent Assembly set up a Drafting Committee under the Chairmanship of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar to prepare a Draft Constitution for India.
  • The Constitution of India was passed by the Constituent Assembly of India on November 26, 1949, but came into effect on January 26, 1950.
  • The Constituent Assembly met for 166 days, spread over a period of two years, 11 months and 18 days. Its sessions were open to the Press and the public.
  • Dr. Sachchidananda Sinha was the first President (temporary chairman) of the Constituent Assembly when it met on December 9, 1946. Dr. Rajendra Prasad then became the President of the Constituent Assembly, and later became the first President of India.
  • The words Socialist and Secular were added to the Preamble of the Constitution by the 42nd Amendment Act, 1976.
  • The first national flag in India is said to have been hoisted on August 7, 1906, in the Parsee Bagan Square (Green Park) in Calcutta, now Kolkata. The flag was composed of three horizontal strips of red, yellow and green.
  • On 26th January 2002, the Indian flag code was modified and after several years of Independence, Indians were allowed to hoist the Indian flag over their homes, offices and factories on any day and not just National Days as was the case earlier.
